Our mission is to imagine and create special robots that enrich people’s lives. By building robots with the mobility, dexterity, and awareness necessary to contribute to modern society, we strive to create a future where humans and machines work together to improve people’s safety, productivity, and quality of life.
Curiosity and respect for the natural world are at the core of our work on robots. Building a machine with legs that can move almost like humans and animals is a big challenge. After decades of work, we are only beginning to exploit the potential possibilities of robots. However, the robot’s general mobility allows us to focus on how to use this new type of automation to improve our lives. We see this as the next step in human history in the construction of machines to minimize the dangers, repetitions, and physically challenging aspects of work.
The next generation of robots will work with us, and therefore, working partnerships become important. We believe that robots will play a complementary role in human ingenuity and creativity in making work safer and more enjoyable. While artificial intelligence is evolving rapidly, we believe that only humans have the intelligence to manage the full complexity and richness of real-world conditions in our diverse workplaces. We build robots designed from the ground up to harness human intelligence, keep people safe, and reduce the most demanding tasks.
It is imperative that robots are reliable if humans want to work efficiently with them. Therefore, we will build robots with tasks and capabilities that are predictable, easy to understand, transparent, and serve human needs. We are committed to being transparent to the public and customers about the state of our technology.
We will not allow or cooperate with those who wish to use our robots as weapons or automated targeting systems. If our product is used to cause harm, we will take appropriate measures to minimize such misuse.
We will not allow or cooperate with those who wish to use our robots in a way that violates privacy and civil rights laws. We understand that emerging artificial intelligence technologies including computer vision and personally identifiable algorithms raise questions about ethics, legitimacy, and the potential for bias around their use in the public domain.
We believe that serving our customers as a government whose duty to protect safety and security is consistent with our mission as long as that work is consistent with our terms of use, which prohibit the use of firearms, targeting and violating privacy and civil rights laws.
We will use our leadership position in robotics to help the public, legislators, governments, and commercial customers understand the capabilities and limitations of current robotics technology. We will support and encourage a combination of stakeholders including academia, industry associations, NGOs, and policymakers to debate and agree on the benefits and risks of this new technology. We will work with lawmakers to advance legislation around the use and deployment of safe robots.
