Meta partners with a company in Hollywood to bring artificial intelligence into the film industry.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has just announced a collaboration with Blumhouse Productions, the famous Hollywood film studio known for blockbuster horror films like The Purge and Get Out, to test a new AI tool called Movie Gen. This collaboration marks a new step for Meta in integrating AI technology with the creative field, particularly the film industry.
Previously, Meta introduced Movie Gen, an AI tool capable of creating realistic videos and audio based on user requests. This tool promises to compete with top startups in the media field such as OpenAI and ElevenLabs.
According to information from Meta, Blumhouse has selected three filmmakers, Aneesh Chaganty, The Spurlock Sisters, and Casey Affleck, to experiment with Movie Gen. These filmmakers will use the videos created by this AI tool in their short films. Chaganty’s film will be screened on Meta’s Movie Gen website, while works by Casey Affleck and The Spurlock Sisters will be released in the near future.
Blumhouse’s CEO, Jason Blum, believes that artists have always been the lifeblood of the film industry, and creative technology can support them in storytelling.
“We welcome the opportunity for some filmmakers to experiment with this advanced technology and provide feedback on its pros and cons while the tool is still in development,” Blum said. “This will be powerful tools for directors, and it is important to engage the creative industry in the development process to ensure they are most suitable for the job.”
This partnership shows that Meta is making efforts to establish connections with the film industry, especially amidst growing concerns about copyright issues and consent when using generative AI. Artists and filmmakers often worry about technology companies using their works without permission to train AI systems.
Although there are difficulties in implementation, Meta and some other technology companies have shown a willingness to pay for certain types of content to serve AI. In addition to the partnership with Movie Gen, Meta has also signed contracts with famous actors such as Judi Dench, Kristen Bell, and John Cena to provide voices for the Meta AI chatbot.
Not only Meta, but also OpenAI, the company backed by Microsoft, has met with directors in Hollywood this year to discuss collaborating on the development of its video creation tool Sora, which was first introduced in February. However, so far, no agreement has been announced from these discussions. Last September, Lions Gate Entertainment announced a partnership with another AI startup, Runway.
With these strategic moves, Meta is gradually asserting its influence in the field of artificial intelligence technology and content creation, opening up new potentials for the entertainment industry in the future.Technology
