At the 6th World Media Conference taking place in the capital Urumqi of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, Northwest China, a group of experts has announced a report titled “The Responsibilities and Mission of the Press in the AI Era.” The report highlights the continuous breakthroughs in AI technology applications, such as voice interaction and image generation. The media industry in some countries and regions is gradually shifting from using AI as a supportive tool to making it a core driving force for operations.

According to the report, artificial intelligence (AI) is driving productivity in the journalism industry, enhancing the ability to collect, produce, distribute, and evaluate content. AI assists in gathering basic information, suggesting news sources and contact addresses, as well as verifying information, thereby providing editors with more valuable information and diverse perspectives. Technologies like writing bots and AI creative assistants help media professionals perform some simple and repetitive tasks.

In addition, artificial intelligence leverages vast linked data to help media organizations gain deeper insights, build user profiles, and enhance connections with readers to deliver more accurate content. The report also notes that AI technology enhances media management capabilities by evaluating communication effectiveness and accurately analyzing data.

However, a recent survey report conducted by a research team shows that the majority of media organizations worldwide express concerns about the reliability of generative AI.

The survey was conducted in Chinese, English, and French among media organizations in 53 countries and regions. When asked about the issues or challenges they anticipate with generative AI, 76.4% expressed concern about the risk of misinformation or distortion. Meanwhile, 61.1% of respondents cited “copyright and legal liability issues” as their second biggest concern.

When considering the impact of generative AI on the reliability of the media industry in the next 3-5 years, survey results show that 36.4% of respondents are pessimistic, higher than the 24.1% who express optimism. Meanwhile, 39.5% have a neutral opinion on this issue.

Based on the survey results, the research team predicts that the majority of global media organizations may only use generative AI to support a small part of the content production process.
