FUTURE R
On February 21, 2024, doctors at K Hospital successfully performed a robotic liver cancer surgery on a 67-year-old patient. The tumor, measuring 4×5 cm, was located in the second segment of the liver, a challenging area for traditional surgery. By utilizing a cutting-edge robotic system, surgeons were able to perform a minimally invasive procedure with remarkable accuracy, reducing patient trauma, speeding up recovery, and enhancing the post-surgical quality of life.
This case is just one of many examples where robotic surgery has proven to be transformative. Before this, K Hospital also used robotic technology in complex surgeries for stomach and rectal cancers, where precision and minimal invasion were crucial for successful outcomes. These surgeries have opened a new era in medical treatment, allowing for highly effective cancer care that reduces risks and accelerates healing.
Expanding the Role of Robotics in Treating Complex Diseases
Robotic surgery was first introduced in Vietnam in 2015 at the National Hospital of Pediatrics. By 2016, Binh Dan Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City became the first institution to perform robotic surgery on adults. In the years that followed, several leading hospitals, including Cho Ray Hospital, Vinmec, and K Hospital, adopted robotic surgical systems across multiple specialties.
At Cho Ray Hospital, for instance, the Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary department has performed over 100 robotic surgeries since 2017. Surgeons trained in robotic techniques benefit from advanced tools such as magnified 3D vision and highly flexible robotic arms that surpass the capabilities of standard laparoscopic surgery. This allows them to operate with unmatched precision in challenging cases, such as those involving small or deep areas within the body.
Robotic-assisted surgeries have proven to be particularly effective in treating conditions such as liver, bile duct, and pancreatic diseases, as well as digestive and urinary system disorders. The technology is also being applied to surgeries involving the joints, nervous system, and even vascular issues affecting the brain, heart, kidneys, and limbs. These procedures are not only more precise but also less invasive, resulting in smaller scars, less pain, faster recovery times, and overall improved patient outcomes.
Robotics: A Gateway to Enhanced Treatment and Care
The growing adoption of robotic-assisted surgery reflects the potential for robotics to transform the way complex medical conditions are treated. In addition to improving surgical accuracy, robots allow for minimally invasive procedures that would otherwise be too difficult or risky with conventional techniques. Patients benefit from fewer complications, reduced scarring, and faster healing times—key factors in improving the overall experience of medical care.
Robotic surgery is now being used in a wide range of medical specialties, including urology, gynecology, thoracic surgery, and orthopedics. Surgeons can now access previously hard-to-reach areas within the body through the use of robotic systems that provide a level of precision that was once unattainable. As technology continues to evolve, its role in healthcare will expand, potentially offering even more refined approaches to patient care in the future.
The Future of Robotics in Patient Care
While robotic technology is already making significant contributions to surgical procedures, its potential extends far beyond the operating room. Shortly, robots are expected to play a key role in the broader realm of patient care, from diagnostic support to routine monitoring and rehabilitation. Healthcare robots may soon be assisting doctors and nurses in administering treatment, caring for patients, and even providing emotional support.
The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) with robotics is also poised to enhance healthcare services. Intelligent robots equipped with AI can analyze vast amounts of medical data, assisting healthcare professionals in making better, data-driven decisions. This could lead to improved accuracy in diagnosis, personalized treatment plans, and more proactive health management.
